Charlene Sue (Kendall) Patton, of Grantville, Kansas, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2026, at the family farm, surrounded by her devoted husband, Dan, their four daughters, and the family she cherished so deeply. She was 73 years old.
Her passing marks the loss of a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, community leader, educator, and lifelong advocate for Kansas agriculture and youth development. Throughout more than five decades of service, Charlene inspired countless families through her work in foods and nutrition, 4-H, baking, and agricultural education.

Charlene Patton died peacefully on September 20, 2026, surrounded by her family after several months of medical care and rehabilitation. Her family expressed heartfelt gratitude to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Jefferson County Home Health, and Stormont Vail Hospital for the compassionate care they provided during her journey.
A Life Rooted in Faith and Community
Born on January 14, 1953, to John and Juanita (Uhl) Kendall, Charlene grew up in Grantville and remained a faithful member of Grantville United Methodist Church for more than 70 years. She taught Sunday school, led youth programs, and served on numerous church committees, making faith the foundation of her life.
A proud graduate of Jefferson West High School in 1971, Charlene’s passion for foods and nutrition began through 4-H, where she became both a state and national award winner. That love continued at Kansas State University, where she earned her degree in Foods and Nutrition in Business in 1975—and where she met the love of her life, Dan Patton.
The couple married on June 18, 1977, and together built a beautiful family centered on love, faith, and tradition.
A Remarkable Career in Kansas Agriculture
Charlene devoted more than 50 years to promoting Kansas food and agricultural products.
She spent 21 years with the Kansas Department of Agriculture, serving as Marketing Specialist and later Domestic Marketing Coordinator, working under five Kansas governors and seven Secretaries of Agriculture. In 1978, she helped establish the now-iconic “From the Land of Kansas” trademark, which continues to identify Kansas-made products around the world.
Her career later included roles with the Kansas Soybean Commission, the Kansas Wheat Commission, and the Home Baking Association, where she served as Executive Director until her retirement in 2023. Generations of Kansans came to know her through her television cooking segments and recipe demonstrations on WIBW-TV, KAKE-TV, and KOAM-TV.
In 2025, WIBW honored her extraordinary legacy with a special program celebrating “50 Years of Cooking with Charlene.”
Family Was Her Greatest Joy
Although Charlene received numerous professional honors—including the Friend of Soy Award, recognition as Kansas State 4-H Family of the Year, and the Benjamin Franklin Book Award for her cookbook Baking with Friends—she considered her greatest accomplishment to be her family.
She treasured attending her grandchildren’s dance recitals, concerts, and sporting events, and for four decades made annual summer vacations with her family a cherished tradition. She proudly embraced her Czech heritage through the Bohemian Hall (ZCBJ Moravan Lodge #128) and loved music, polka dancing, baking, gardening, and creating lasting memories around the kitchen table.

- Daughters Jana Patton, Krista (Kyle) Kramer, Megan (Aaron) Pavez, and Lori (John) Patton Aguilar
- Eleven cherished grandchildren: Lee, Ezra, Sunny, Charlotte, Ophelia, Isabel, Danny, Madelyn, Everett, Josie, and Noa
- Brother Ronnie (Julie) Kendall
- Sister Karen (Robert) Norris
- Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Juanita Kendall, and her nephew, Ryan W. Kendall.
